Agrivoltaics at Fraunhofer ISE

Agrivoltaics at Fraunhofer ISE

The agrivoltaics group at Fraunhofer ISE brings together expertise from very different disciplines to jointly research the combination of agriculture and photovoltaics.

Our Mission

We stand for practical research, sector coupling and stakeholder diversity.

In this way, we defuse the global competition for land and create innovative perspectives for the agriculture of the future.

Our aim is to design technical innovations that are socially just, ecologically compatible and economically profitable.

In this way, we contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Vision Team Agri-PV
Fraunhofer ISE
We protect plants, soils, water and climate. We develop solutions for synergetic land use to ensure sustainable food, water and energy supplies.

Integrated Photovoltaics - Surfaces for the Energy Transition

Agrivoltaics belongs to the field of integrated photovoltaics.

The term "integrated" describes the fact that photovoltaic modules fit into the surfaces of buildings, traffic routes and vehicles. In this way, the solar cells are no longer visible from the outside and, apart from generating solar electricity, they even fulfil other functions. Integrated photovoltaics not only share surfaces with agriculture, but are also used on water surfaces in flooded open-cast mines.

Research for the Energy Transition

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE creates the technical conditions for an efficient and environmentally friendly energy supply, both in industrialized countries and in emerging and developing countries.

With its main research areas of energy generation, energy efficiency, energy distribution and energy storage, it contributes to the transformation of our energy system towards sustainable and renewable sources through the broad application of new technologies.
